Dr. Thomas J. Lower (1947 - 2025) Dr. Thomas J. Lower, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, physician, and veteran, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on September 29, 1947, Thomas (Tom) was the oldest son in a large Irish Catholic family of 13 children. He grew up in Parnell, Iowa, on the family farm and was a graduate of Williamsburg High School. A gifted and passionate athlete, Tom played sports year-round and earned a full scholarship to Grinnell College, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Following college, Tom pursued his lifelong calling in medicine, earning his medical degree from Des Moines University. He then proudly served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, spending 2 1/2 years stationed in Germany as a medical doctor. His service reflected the same steady leadership and deep care for others that defined every chapter of his life. sense of humor, Dr. Lower became a cornerstone of the community. He was a trusted and lifelong friend to many of his patients. "Doc" (as he was more commonly referred to in town) was always approachable at the grocery store or at a high school game for an impromptu medical appointment. He was one of the smartest people we knew, especially when it came to sports. He could rattle off just about any statistic or fact without missing a beat. Yet despite his many talents and achievements, he remained humble, grounded, and quietly proud of the life he built. He also loved singing karaoke with friends and family. Whether performing a favorite classic or just having fun, his songs were always delivered with heart--and usually a few laughs. To his children, he was their rock, providing strength, stability and guidance anytime it was needed. To his grandchildren, he was a source of endless warmth and joy. He was silly with them, complimented them often, loved hearing about all their activities, and made each of them feel seen, valued, and deeply loved. He also loved to embarrass them with his off-colored jokes or sarcastic sayings. One of his favorite lessons to share with them was how to play poker at family gatherings, a long-time Lower family favorite pastime. Tom loved to travel and particularly enjoyed cruises with his wife, Ceree. Together, they brought home many pieces of artwork from their journeys, treasures that decorated their home and sparked stories for family and friends. His curiosity and openness to the world enriched both his life and the lives of those around him. Dr. Lower is survived by his loving wife, Ceree; his sons Michael, Thomas (Kate), and Daniel; and his daughters Erin (David), Jennifer, and Jill. He was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and a much-loved brother to Betty (Walt), Tish (Jim), Bob (Dort), Frank, Helen, Don (Theresa), David (Carla), Marita (Rob), Susie and uncle to dozens of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Laurine Lower; his sisters, Mary Cathrine and Janet; his brother, Mike; and his beloved son, Joe. The loss of Joe completely broke his heart, so we are happy they will be reunited. A celebration of life memorial service will be held on August 10th, from 12 -3 pm at the Ankeny Outdoor Education Center (610 NE 36th Street, Ankeny, IA 50023). Dr. Thomas J. Lower lived a life of purpose, compassion, and quiet excellence. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
