Patrick L. Houston

Patrick Leo Houston, 89, of Denison, Iowa, passed away Friday, July 22, 2016. Patrick was born in rural Dow City, IA, on April 11th, 1927 to John Thomas and Susan (Kelly) Houston. He attended school in Dow City. He farmed with his father up until his enlistment into the United States Navy in 1945. He served his country during World War II. After he was honorably discharged, he was employed by the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company and Farmer’s Elevator in Denison, Iowa. He was an avid and successful cattleman. Patrick greatly enjoyed driving in the pasture tending his cows and calves. On April 14th, 1945, Patrick married the love of his life, Lois Anne Lenz, in Denison, Iowa. To this union was born seven children: John Patrick Houston, Colette Marsh, Barbara (Steve Constance) Houston, Sally (Herbert) Quandt, Timothy (Kelli) Houston, Jane (Rick) Carstensen, and Anne Garreans (Mike) Power. More recently, Patrick, along with Chris Petersen and others, were committed to the relocation of the original church bell to a prominent location east of the church. Patrick was a true servant leader. He was also a two-term member of the Denison City Council, a member of the Board of Directors of Crawford County Bank, active in the Democratic Party, a board member of St. Rose Catholic School, and an officer in the American Legion. Patrick had an entrepreneurial spirit and was involved in many ventures in the area. Patrick was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. One of his fondest memories was traveling with his wife to Ireland. His family knows that Irish Eyes are Smiling in Heaven today. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Houston and Susan (Kelly) Houston; his son, John Patrick; sisters Beatrice Jacques and Marilyn McGill; and brother Harold Houston. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lois; six children; twenty grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
