maha. Shirley had a passion and dedication for her community that surpassed any barriers this world could present. With this determination She managed and owned the Back Street Lounge for over 20 years. Later becoming the owner and manager of Cleopatra's, Supper Club, Tiffany's and The Back Stage Lounges. For some people this would be enough to rest on their laurels but not Shirley. Philanthropy, paying it forward and upholding her community are paramount thoughts for Shirley. Giving more whether she had it to give or not was just Shirley's way. Regality, elegance and class were standards Shirley insisted on. In Omaha Shirley was institutional in implementing programs for low income women to assist them in developing an increased positive self-image and better prepare them to enter the workplace. Shirley was also an activist for various anti-gang groups and assisted at risk youth in obtaining education, scholarships, and legal services. As a member of Black Forum, a community advocacy group for various civil and equal rights issues Shirley was a trailblazer. It was important to her to assist others in navigating the bureaucracy of local and county government. If she knew it, you did to. Shirley was very liberal when it came to sharing knowledge. Shirley was also appointed to a Special Task force backed by the City Council. This groups visited and assessed a Community Development Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri. This model was adapted for similar Omaha projects. Shirley also served on a myriad of boards and committees including: The Advisory Board of Directors for American Savings and Loan, YMCA Board of Directors, United Methodist Community Center Board (Wesley House), North Omaha Development Corporation Board, and the Urban League of Nebraska Guild. Shirley established and presided over the Organization of Wesley Women, sponsored 1,000 scholarships for low income students through Wesley House, and in her spare time founded and sponsored the inaugural annual Botillion, a tradition that continues today. Shirley received a multitude of accolades over the years. Some of those honors include; NAACP, United Way, National Council of Negro Women, North Omaha Economic Development Corporation, Midwest Guardians, and Black Employee's Networks. Shirley leaves to celebrate her legacy two sisters, Olivia "Lee" Williams, and Pamela "MeeMa" Dankoff; Two nieces, Tanya Beacham Burnside , Micki Taylor (Gordon); Nephew, Edward Williams Jr.; a great niece, a host of great nephews , cousins and friends.
