MICHAEL GORDON HELLMAN

Michael Gordon Hellman, 74, of Marquette, passed away Friday evening, December 18, 2020 at U.P. Health System-Marquette following open heart surgery. Mike was born on May 5, 1946 in Flint, Michigan, a son of the late Gordon and Gertrude (Decker) Hellman and was a 1964 graduate of Hancock High School. He then attended Michigan Tech University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1968. He eventually received a Master's Degree in Public Administration in 1979 from Northern Michigan University. Upon graduating from Michigan Tech, Mike was employed by Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for over a year. He then moved to Milwaukee where he began working with Allis-Chalmers and later for Paragon Electric in their sales force. In 1973, Mike moved to Marquette where he became employed with Northern Michigan University in their physical plant department, a position he maintained until retiring from NMU in 2008. Mike was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Marquette Golf Club where he previously served on their board of directors. here he was a former coach and also sat on their board of directors. Family and friends were essential in Mike's life. Being a very social person, he relished time spent with all his friends and family. Mike is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Suzanne Bourdeau whom he married on September 8, 1973 at St. Joseph's Church in Lake Linden; two sons, Gregory Marc (Jodi) Hellman of Marquette and Stephen Michael Hellman of Grand Rapids; two grandchildren, Abigail Grace Hellman and Maxwell Gregory Hellman; a step-granddaughter, Amanda Kay Centko; one sister, Sharon Bauer of Orlando, FL; one sister-in-law, Kathleen Pini of Lake Linden; former daughters-in-law, Barbara Hellman and Alicia Kuehn; also several nieces and nephews. Preceding Mike in death besides his parents were two siblings, Gerald Hellman and Susan Lines. At this time, there will be no visitation or funeral service scheduled. Burial will take place in 2021 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorial contributions can be sent to Marquette Junior Hockey 401 E.
