In loving memory of

Ronnie W. Menneke
June 22, 1964 - March 5, 2012

Ronnie William Menneke was born June 22, 1964, in Algona, the sixth of seven children of Arthur E. "Bud" and Lois Faye (Whiteman) Menneke. Ron grew up in Algona graduating from Algona High School in 1982. He then attended Buena Vista College for one year. He returned to Algona where he worked at McDonald's and Algona Glass. Ron was an assistant detasseling crew leader for Pioneer for several years always looked forward to it every summer.

Ron was united in marriage to Stephanie Parcel on April 2, 1994, at Faith Assembly of God church in Algona. On his 30th birthday, he returned to college graduating in May, 1998 from Buena Vista College with a degree in Education. Ron taught two years at Prairie Valley High School in Gowrie. August 2000 to present, he taught math at Emmetsburg High School. Ron was loved by the students and faculty. His witty math skills and fun with the students will be missed. Stephanie encouraged and supported Ron in his educational pursuits and during the years of working long hours in teaching positions 65 miles away. She enjoyed stopping in Emmetsburg to have lunch with him and meeting his students and fellow instructors.

Ron had many passions in life including his family, his church, nature, and Taekwondo. He loved spending time with his family and could often be found teaching his daughters about nature and flowers, two of his interests. The girls often commented about the deer or birds they saw with their daddy. Together, as a family, they enjoyed trips to visit extended family in Colorado, yearly visits to the Apple Orchard in Ft. Dodge, the Algona Nativity Scene, and a family fun trip last summer to an indoor water park at a Des Moines hotel.

Ron was a devoted Christian and his love for the Lord was the driving force of his life. He was involved as a sound booth technician, youth leader, and had served on the worship team at Faith Assembly of God in Algona. He will be remembered by his uncanny Bible knowledge, but he'll be loved by the compassionate way he treated everyone. This compassion and regard for others was evident by remarks made by so many these past few days: "He never gave up on us." "If he was having a bad day, you never knew it." "He was always smiling or joking around." "He cared about us."

His Taekwondo involvement began in 1982. In 1984, as a 1st Degree Black Belt trainee instructor, he began his teaching career in various locations in north central Iowa. He worked diligently through the Black Belt ranks until in 2002 he received the rank of 6th Degree Black Belt. In 2003, the rank of Master Instructor was conferred on him by the Grand Master of the American Taekwondo Association in ceremonies in Little Rock, AR. Stephanie, Ron's wife, just received word this week that the ATA has promoted Ron to 7th Degree Black Belt Senior Master.

He was a beloved instructor who instilled integrity as well as correct technique. Many of his students have earned marks of distinction because of his thorough training.

He served Region 114 of the ATA for many years as the Regional Chief of Tournaments. His involvement took him to tournaments in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. He is remembered fondly by the Region as an excellent martial artist and a thoughtful man.

He is survived by his wife Stephanie; his three daughters, Kayelynn (10), Chloe (8), and Cassandra (6); and his parents-in-law, Darrell and Sandy Parcel. He is also survived by four sisters and two brothers, Sharon (Wayne) Townsend of Thornton, CO, Roger (Dianne) Menneke of Urbandale, Daniel (Patricia) Lamb Menneke of West Des Moines, Kristy Williams of Algona, Brenda Anderson of Chicago, IL, and Diane Menneke of Algona; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Penny (Ringo) Karstedt of Brookshire, TX; Dan (Amber) Parcel of Algona, and Abby Langenwalter of Algona; and his grandmother-in-law, Barbara Fox of Algona. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members. Ron was preceded in death by his parents.

Steve Hupp wrote on Mar 8, 2012:

"Dear Stephanie & Girls: My heart goes out to you and your entire family. In 1984, I was an eighteen year old college kid in need of some direction in life. I was intrigued when I happened upon a TaeKwonDo class that Mr. Menneke taught at a local community college in Emmetsburg. Mr. Menneke taught me the punching and kicking of TaeKwonDo, but he taught me so much more than that; he taught me life skills. He demonstrated integrity and honesty in everything he said and did. I was an avid observer of not only his talents as a martial artist, but his qualitites as a good, decent human being. Mr. Menneke instilled in me a sense of self-discipline. He made it very clear that I needed to practice every single night, which meant I had to forgo the college partying with my buddies. Mr. Menneke's confidence in my ability and potential inspired me to set goals and achieve them; it became my objective to make Mr. Menneke proud. After about a year, I moved back to my hometown and took TaeKwonDo from a local club there; but the instructors were nothing like Mr. Menneke; his unique method of teaching was incomparable. Master Menneke's influence charted the course for my life. As his student in 1984, I made a decision to commit to TaeKwonDo for a lifetime. I opened my own TaeKwonDo School in Tucson, Arizona 25 years ago and continue to use the fundamentals that were taught to me by Master Menneke over 28 years ago. Mr. Menneke will always have my deepest appreciation, respect, and admiration. Steve Hupp Tucson, Arizona"

"I knew the first time I met Ron that he was unique right off the bat. His sense of humor invigorating. He accected people for who they were regardless of where they had come from or where they were at the time. I was blessed to have established a friendship with him that I will never forget. I know he was a man of God and that God got a good one with his passing. He was too young and we may never understand why but there is a reason for this. If it wakes us up by making us better people by Ron's example of how he lived life, so be it. There is something possitive about everything that happens in this world no matter how sad you might feel. I just hope that whoever you are that if you had the opportunity to meet him that you got what I got from the very first time I met him...Rest in peace my friend..."

He guides me along the right paths for his nameā??s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,[a] I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. "Stephanie and Girls, Your husband and father truly understood the importance of others and not self. He was such an accomplished man, but instead focused on his girls, students, family, friends, and faith. It is a lasting lesson for all of us from Mr. Menn. On his way to EHS, he'd drive up the hill by our house. In his selfless manner, he often talked to us about our flowers. He especially liked the hibiscus, and often mentioned noticing it blooming in the fall. Maybe you girls could plant a hardy hibiscus this year and again when you have your own homes? Then, when people ask about your beautiful fall flower, you may tell them it is hibiscus, your dad's favorite fall perennial. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and your families as you cope with his loss. "

"I met Ron over 15yrs ago because I was interested to learn Taekwondo. I was impressed by the excellence in his craft. Watching him perform his form was truly remarkable. He was smooth, crisp, powerful, graceful, and explosive all rolled into one.Perfection. He would teach me how to make my uniform snap when performing kicks and strikes. When he worked with me one on one, he would show me skills he didn't often show others. A fun side of himself, he would place a ball cap on my head, stand next to me,raise his leg in a round kick, then take off my hat between his toes.He would then smile and place it back on my head in the same manner. He just did this again a few weeks ago at the Wellness Center. A truly amazing feat of flexibility and body control. I then started playing foosball competitively. I would see Ron from time to time and found out he was a foosball enthusiast. He was impressed with my skill and abilities just as I was with his. I would occasionally demonstrate for him the skill I had acquired. IT WAS GREAT FUN. I then started lifting weights seriously with the same determination, consistency, and drive that he approached his craft with.He would see me Monday nights working out at the Wellness Center while he was teaching Taekwondo and flex at me through the window. I in turn would stand at attention, take off my hat and bow to my teacher. We would joke about how I could lift 505lbs from the floor and he could break 3 boards at once with one strike. We would spend time outside the Wellness Center after closing laughing and telling jokes and sharing stories of life's experiences. Not more than four weeks ago we were standing in college parking lot cleaning snow off his car laughing and telling stories in the middle of a snow storm. I also remember the time we (my family) invited him to sit down with us and east supper at A&W when he had night school responsibilities. I am sad today because I'm going to miss the man whose traits I admire. He is humble in his excellence. He is patient in his teaching. He is friendly in his encounters with people. WE SHOULD ALL ASPIRE TO BE A LITTLE LIKE RON. Mark Johnson and family. "

"Many of us had Mr. Menneke as a freshman math teacher at Prairie Valley during his first couple years out of college. Looking back, I'd say we gave him a pretty tough time (mostly in a good way) and probably heckled him more than we should have. He always smiled through it, had a sense of humor and had funny ways of helping us remember mathematical things as we learned. In more recent years, I have lived in the Algona area, and became reacquainted with him after seeing him at a couple AHS basketball games this past winter. I was so surprised he remembered me! We laughed talking about days at PV and caught up on where life took us over the past 10 years or so. He was sure proud to tell me about his family & his girls. Today I was shocked & saddened to hear of his untimely passing. My PV classmates and I will certainly remember him at our 10 year reunion this coming summer! May God be with you and comfort you at this time! Our thoughts and prayers are with you! Emilie Nelson Algona, IA on behalf of the PVHS class of 2002"

"I will never forget how hard you tried to get everyone to pay attention to you in consumer math. You would try and try until you had everyone's attention and then go back to teaching even if it took you the entire class period. You may have gotten mad and had a few "outstanding students" a couple times a week but when the bell rang and and we came in for homeroom you acted as if nothing happened. You were an amazing teacher and even if i played Sudoku instead of paying attention to you at the board you never got mad at me because you knew I had my assignment done. You touched everyone you meet even if they didn't know it before now. You were an amazing person and will be greatly missed. I give all my sympathy and love to you family, especially your girls, because they don't know what a great person you really were."

"Steph and family- Ron will be missed dearly but we all know where he is and thats with the Lord. Hes looking down on you guy and every one he knows and loves. He was a great youth leader and last Wednesday was a fun night when we read the whole story of David and Golith. He had stuff that he wanted to use. He had a giant staff and he had an old belt and 5 bouncy balls and when it came to the part where David hit Golith with the rock in the head he would swing the belt like David did then throw one of the "rocks" to the wall and acted like he hit Golith. I love you guys and he loves you 2. The other part that was so great about him is that he had almost the whole BIBLE memorized. He sounds like my brother with race cars. I would tell my brother a number or a name and he would tell you who the person is or the number they drive. If you read a scripture or tell him the book chapter and verse he would be able to say it. He was a great youth leader and husband and father to us and you guys. I miss him."

So I speak with pride when I say that his lessons, his words, and his kind spirit will never die, they will live on in his students, family, and friends. "

"I met Mr. Menneke when I was a freshman. I was in Algebra one but there are those teachers in the school that everyone can't wait to have. I couldn't wait to get to geometry so I could finally be in his class. When I finally got there I realized why everyone like him so much, he was very honest and caring plus he was always there for you with math or any problem. He was a very fun person to be around and was always smiling I don't recall him ever having a bad day. He always kept you intertained whether you were learning about taekwondo or math. One of my favorite memories is one time Mr. Menn and I were joking around and we decided to wrestle after school and he was way better than I had expected. He was more than a teacher he was a friend and he didn't just teach you math if you looked at Mr. Menneke he was showing you how to live life. Live it happy and day to day and respect everyone. Everyone will miss such and amazing person. My prayers are with you and your family. "

"Mr. Menneke was by far my absolute favorite teacher while I attended EHS. He was not only a wonderful teacher, but also a counselor, friend, and a great listener. I always loved the fact that no matter how bad of a day you were having, Mr. Menneke would either come up with a solution to make it better or else give you an example of just how much worse it really could have been. It didn't always make me feel any better at the time, but it was a great lesson to learn, as were many of his others. If it weren't for him and his support through high school, I honestly don't think I would be at the point that I am at today. He helped me to accomplish so many goals during those rough times for me, and that helped lead me to an even greater future than I could have ever dreamed of. I only wish that I could have made the time to go back and thank him for all that he's done for me and for everyone around him.
