Dr. Stanley J. Nuland
November 16, 1930 - March 25, 2010

Stanley John Nuland was born to immigrant parents, John Severin and Synneva Bjarnesdatter (Nee Molster) Nuland on November 16, 1930 in Stoughton, WI. He was raised on a farm in Deerfield, WI, attended Deerfield Public Schools and graduated in 1948 as valedictorian. He entered the University of Wisconsin Pre-Med and Medical Schools receiving his bachelor's degree in 1952 and his MD in 1955. After a one year internship in Duluth, MN he served as Captain with the US Army Medical Corps at Fort Riley, KS where he found his interest in surgery. In 1958 he returned to the University of Wisconsin, completed a four-year surgical residence, with his final year as Chief Resident. Dr. Nuland established his private practice in general surgery in Platteville, WI where he remained from 1962 to 1979. He then joined the staff of Milwaukee Industrial Clinics. He was a member of the Fellow American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the Wisconsin Surgical Society. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage, was an active member of Vosselag and served a term as president. Throughout his adult life he enjoyed many hobbies such as landscaping, playing guitar and making fine handcrafted wood furniture. After suffering a stroke in 1998, he retired and discovered a new interest, computers. During this time he translated many books and papers from Norwegian into English. He work has become a valuable resource for genealogical research and earned him special recognition for his contributions from the City of Voss, Norway. In following years, Dr. Nuland battled multiple medical problems including diabetes, renal failure and cancer. Stanley wed Barbara Mullen of Deerfield on October 2, 1954. He is survived by his wife and five children, Siri (Joseph) Hernandez, Jane Nuland, Andrea (Donald) Saunders, David (Carmen) Nuland, Dagny Aiken, six grandchildren, Elisa Camargo, Rachel Hernandez, Anne Rivera, Michael Hernandez, William (Kelsea) Aiken (currently serving in Afghanistan) and Hannah Aiken, Two step-grandchildren, Kyle and Bradley Saunders, six great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Lorraine Nuland, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Fredrick and Bjarne, sister Karen Borrud, brother-in-law Einar Borrud, sister-in-law Dorothy Nuland and nephew Allen Borrud. He entered eternal life at AngelsGrace Hospice, Oconomowoc on March 25, 2010. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for all the care and kindness he received from Brookfield Rehabilitation Center, Purity Dialysis Center and a special thank you to AngelsGrace Hospice staff for making his final days peaceful and comfortable. Visitation at Cross of Life Lutheran Church (20700 W. North Ave. Brookfield, WI) on Thursday, April 1, 2010, 11AM-1PM. Funeral Service 1PM. Burial following at Deerfield Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Cross of Life Lutheran Church, AngelsGrace Hospice or the health charity of your choice would be appreciated.
